This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This interview features Elizabeth Norris, the manager of CitizenSpace, a collaboration space located at 425 2nd Street in San Francisco. It is an open work space which in many ways embodies the collaborative spaces in which Free Open Source Software is created and distributed. The DTP crew are following the story of CitizenSpace merely because it is a physical metaphor for the collaboration that happens in the virtual world of cyberspace.
Elisabeth explains that CitizenSpace is growing and getting a new lease on a new room at 425 Second Street. The new space is 3,500 square feet, as opposed to 1,500 square feet for the previous space on the third floor. She says that the new space is getting more amenities, such as a kitchen and more room for events such as Equality Camp.
She says that CitizenSpace is analogous to Free Open Source Software in that both phenomena bring together diverse people in a collaborative work environment. In CitizenSpace, like Free Open Source Software production, people will help one another solve problems and each individually benefit materially from helping others. She says that CitizenSpace, like Free Open Source Software, is not a walled garden, unlike proprietary software and some social networking sites. People in CitizenSpace, like Free Open Source Software, are motivated by accumulating Whuffie (good reputation), as described in Tara Hunt's book, "The Whuffie Factor".
Elisabeth says that she is a "Mac girl", and switched from Microsoft Windows two years ago. She has not tried Linux, because she is not sure how it would benefit her. Her husband developes software using Linux.
Do keep an eye out for a cameo appearance in this interview by Ridley, The Wonder Dog. He's the little black pug dog with a dashing red sweater.
